# What is “Group”?

A group is a cohort inside an occasion — a team, delegate category, partner tier or bride's side — used to scope content, access, polls, chat, leaderboards and notifications.

Also called: cohort, audience group

## Group in detail

Group-first design is a core principle of the Sociana platform: instead of building one experience for everyone and filtering later, almost every module can be targeted or restricted by group. A dealer meet can run Partners and Employees in the same app, each seeing a different agenda, different notices and different polls. A wedding can separate the bride's side from the groom's for travel instructions, then merge everyone for the reception. Groups can be assigned by the organiser, derived from imported profile fields such as zone or category, or joined by members themselves when the group is marked self-join. Groups also power team leaderboards, team targets in step challenges and group-eligibility rules on attendance. Because scoping happens at the group level, a single configuration change, such as posting a hotel update, reaches exactly the right members without anyone filtering a spreadsheet at midnight.

## How Sociana uses it

Groups are created in the admin panel or imported with members. Feature rules such as group polls, group-aware feeds and attendance group eligibility all read the same group list.

## Example

A partners meet kept Partners and Employees as separate groups, so each saw its own content inside one branded app.

## Questions

What is a group in Sociana?

A group is a cohort of members inside an occasion, such as a team or delegate category. It scopes what people see, which polls they receive and which notifications reach them. Groups can be assigned by the organiser, derived from imported profile fields such as zone or category, or joined by members themselves when the group is marked self-join.

Can members join groups themselves?

Yes, when an organiser marks a group as self-join. Otherwise groups are assigned by the organiser or derived from imported profile fields like zone or category. Groups are created in the admin panel or imported with members. Groups also power team leaderboards, team targets in step challenges and group-eligibility rules on attendance.

What does group-first design mean?

It means every module can be targeted or restricted by group rather than only by person or whole occasion, so one app serves several audiences without separate builds. Group-first design is a core principle of the Sociana platform: instead of building one experience for everyone and filtering later, almost every module can be targeted or restricted by group.
