# How to run audience voting without an app download

Run audience voting at an awards night or town hall with a QR code and no app install: set-up, one vote per person, screens, moderation and results.

**To run audience voting without an app download, show a QR code on the venue screen, let people vote in their phone browser with no sign-in, display results live, set rules for one vote per person and keep a moderator ready.** Everyone in the room can take part, including guests who never installed the app.

## Why not ask everyone to install an app

Every extra step in a voting flow costs participation. Asking a room of several hundred people to download an app, create an account and wait for an OTP in the middle of an awards night means a long pause and a thin response. A browser link opens in a few seconds on any smartphone.

India’s internet use is wide: DataReportal’s Digital 2026 India report counts 1.03 billion internet users in October 2025 ([DataReportal, 2026](https://datareportal.com/reports/digital-2026-india)). That tells you the web is familiar to most people. It does not say that every guest in your hall has a data connection, so plan for the venue’s coverage, as covered in our guide to [games when venue Wi-Fi is poor](https://sociana.in/guides/games-with-poor-venue-wifi/).

An app still has value. Guests who install it can see agenda, travel details and games all in one place. A no-login flow works as the open door, and the app as the home.

## When no-login voting fits

| Situation | Fit | Note |
| ------------------------------------------- | ------ | ------------------------------ |
| Awards night with a public audience vote | Strong | Results reveal on screen |
| Town hall poll with all employees in a hall | Strong | Anonymous by default |
| Product launch to partners | Strong | Quick reaction polls |
| Closed jury scoring | Weak | Use authenticated roles |
| Binding corporate resolution | Check | Needs identity and audit rules |

If votes must be tied to a verified identity, such as for a formal resolution, use an authenticated route and check requirements with your advisers.

## Step 1: define what is being voted on

Write each question or category plainly. For an award, list the nominees with names and photographs. For a poll, keep options short. Decide whether each vote is single choice, multiple choice or ranked. Limit the number of questions per session, since people tire quickly.

## Step 2: decide the rules for one person, one vote

No-login voting is easy to join, so it needs rules. Decide how you will prevent repeated votes. Typical approaches are a limit per device or session, a time window and moderation of results. Be clear about what each approach can and cannot prevent. A browser-based vote cannot prove identity; it can discourage casual repetition. For awards where the audience vote is only part of the decision, combine it with a jury score. Say so in advance.

## Step 3: prepare the venue screen

Design the screen for distance reading: large type, high contrast, short labels. Show the QR code with a short instruction and keep it visible while voting is open. Test the QR at the back of the hall at the actual brightness and projection. Prepare slides for the question, the live result and the reveal. Plan who controls the screen: a manager with trigger rights can open and close questions from their phone while the operator keeps the display open.

## Step 4: brief the emcee

The emcee must say three things clearly: scan the QR, vote now, and voting closes in a set time. Rehearse the script. Tell guests when to expect the result. Avoid dead air while votes arrive. Use music or a short interview while the timer runs.

## Step 5: moderate and monitor

Watch the live count. If numbers look odd, such as a sudden spike or a nominee leading by an impossible margin, pause and check. Keep a moderator ready to close voting early. Staff should be excluded from public results so partner outcomes stay honest.

## Step 6: reveal and record

Reveal results on screen in a way that suits the occasion: a count-up for a poll, a drum roll for an award. Record the final tally and keep an export for the organiser. After the event, share results with participants if appropriate.

## Common pitfalls

- **QR too small or poorly placed.** Guests at the back cannot scan it.
- **Voting window too short.** People are still finding the link.
- **Too many questions.** Fatigue cuts the response.
- **Unclear rules.** Nominees’ supporters dispute the result.
- **No fallback.** Keep a show of hands or paper ballot ready for a network failure.

## A worked example: an awards night with eight categories

Imagine a company awards night with eight categories and about 400 guests. The organiser decides that the audience vote counts for part of the result in four of them, and that the jury decides the others.

Before the event, nominee photographs and names are loaded for the four audience categories. A single QR code is generated and placed on the venue screen, on printed table cards and on the invitation. The emcee agrees to open each category with a short film of the nominees, then say: scan the code on screen and vote within the minute. A manager with trigger rights starts each category from their phone as the film ends.

During the night, the operator keeps the venue screen on the live display. When the minute is up, the manager closes voting. The moderator checks the tally for anomalies. For categories where the audience vote is partial, the result is combined with the jury score off screen and the winner announced by the emcee. For the others, the winner is revealed on screen directly.

This example is a planning pattern, not a record of a particular event. The same outline works for a town hall poll, a launch reaction or a quiz.

## Accessibility and language

Not everyone reads small text or sits close to the screen. Print the QR code and a short URL on table cards, and read the instructions aloud. Offer the question in more than one language where your audience needs it, so guests vote in the language they are comfortable with. Make sure colours on the result screen have strong contrast. Provide a seat near the screen for people who need it. If some guests do not have a smartphone, seat a volunteer at each table to help them vote on a shared device with their consent.

## After the vote

Keep the record. Export the final counts and the timeline of votes, and note any decisions made by the moderator. Thank participants and, where suitable, share the results on the occasion timeline or by message. If the audience vote was only part of the decision, explain how the final result was reached. Transparent communication protects the credibility of the award, and the nominees will appreciate it.

## How Sociana handles this

Sociana’s [live polls and voting](https://sociana.in/features/live-polls-and-voting/) run on the same engine whether a participant answers inside the branded app or on a public web page with no login. Public web flows expose no-login polls and voting, so anyone can scan a QR code and answer, and results from the app and the web merge into the same occasion, leaderboard and reports. An Owner or Manager with trigger rights starts and closes questions from their phone, and results render on a venue screen. Staff exclusion keeps internal team members off public results.

The HCCB Partners Meet 2026 app in Goa carried an Awards tab with nominees and winner cards, and live polls alongside games. Audience voting for awards can run through the no-login route. ## Frequently asked questions

### Can guests vote more than once?

That depends on the rules you set. A no-login flow can limit repeated votes but cannot prove identity, so for high-stakes categories combine the audience vote with a jury score.

### Do the web votes count in the same result as app votes?

Yes. Answers from the browser and the app land in the same occasion, so the screen and reports show one result.

### Does the voting page work on any phone?

It opens in a standard mobile browser on current smartphones. Test on a few devices and on the venue network before the event.

### Can we show results live?

Yes. Results can redraw on the venue screen as answers arrive, or be held until the reveal, depending on how you configure the display.
