# How to organise a stepathon for employees: teams, caps, boosts and fair play

Set a start date, daily goals and caps, form teams, add boost days and streaks, block manual entries and review unusual days so a stepathon stays fair.

**To organise a stepathon for employees, set a start date, a daily goal and a daily cap, form teams, add boost days and streaks for momentum, exclude manually typed steps and review unusual days. Participants sync steps from Apple Health or Health Connect and watch a team leaderboard.**

## What a stepathon is, and what it is not

A stepathon is a time-boxed walking competition. People count steps on their phone, the app adds them up per person and per team, and a leaderboard shows the standings. It can run for the length of an offsite (three days) or a programme (thirty days or more). It is not a wellness platform: there is no sleep tracking, nutrition coaching or biometric screening. It is a step and activity challenge, and it works best when it is a visible, social part of something bigger.

India’s corporate wellness market generated US$664.5 million in 2025 and is forecast to reach US$912.5 million by 2033 ([Grand View Research, 2026](https://www.grandviewresearch.com/horizon/outlook/corporate-wellness-market/india)). HR teams are being asked to show participation, and a stepathon is a cheap, legible way to produce it.

## Step 1: decide the shape before you pick the tool

Answer four questions in writing:

1. **How long?** Three days suits an offsite. Four weeks suits a workplace programme. Anything shorter than a weekend gives teams no time to recover from a bad day.
2. **Individuals, teams or both?** Teams produce the social energy; individuals produce the personal best. Most stepathons score both, and show them in separate views.
3. **Who is eligible?** Everyone invited, or only a department? Eligibility becomes a group.
4. **What does winning mean?** Total steps, average per head, consistency or improvement? Average per head is fairer to small teams.

## Step 2: choose goals, caps and boosts

Three numbers shape the contest.

- **Daily goal:** the number of steps that earns the day’s streak. Pick something most people can hit, such as 6,000 to 8,000.
- **Daily cap:** the maximum counted steps per day. A cap stops one marathon runner dragging the team table out of reach, and it makes outliers harmless.
- **Boost days:** a multiplier on selected days to lift participation, for example a mid-week boost when motivation sags.

Write all three on the rules page in plain words, with an example: “If you walk 22,000 steps on a day with a 15,000 cap, 15,000 count.”

## Step 3: configure sync and permissions

Participants open the Engagement tab, tap Count Your Steps and grant permission to the phone’s health store. Android uses Health Connect and iPhone uses Apple Health. Once the challenge has started and the countdown ends, they tap Sync Steps.

Android held 93.89% of India’s mobile OS market against 6.05% for iOS in September 2026 ([StatCounter, 2026](https://gs.statcounter.com/os-market-share/mobile/india)), so test Health Connect on at least three different Android handsets, including an older one, before launch. Sociana syncs through Health Connect and Apple Health only; it does not connect directly to Fitbit, Garmin or Strava. If a participant wears one of those, the watch needs to write into the phone’s health store first.

## Step 4: form teams and keep them balanced

Teams of six to ten work well. Mix departments, locations and ages so that the team is a reason to talk to a stranger. If participants self-join, cap each team’s size to avoid one department stacking the top table. If you assign teams, publish the list a week ahead and let people swap within reason.

Give each team a name and, if the culture allows, a colour. A team that has a name has an identity, and a team with an identity checks the leaderboard.

## Step 4b: add streaks and badges

A streak records consecutive days at or above the goal. Badges mark milestones: a first 10,000-step day, a five-day streak, the highest single-day count. Both are cheap to run and valuable for people who will never top the table but will not break a streak. Publish the thresholds.

## Step 5: protect fairness

Step contests invite shortcuts: phone shakers, manual typing, one device carried by two people. Four controls cover most of it:

| Control | What it does |
| --------------------------- | ---------------------------------------------------- |
| Exclude manual entries | Only sensor data counts |
| Daily cap | Limits any one day’s contribution |
| Unusual-day flag | Marks abnormal days for admin review |
| Health-source deduplication | Stops the same steps counting twice from two sources |

When you review a flagged day, ask the participant before you decide. A flag is a prompt for a conversation, not a verdict.

## Step 6: communicate through the contest

Run the first week hard. Send a start message, a day-two nudge, a mid-week team update and a Sunday recap. Use scheduled announcements so the cadence does not depend on one person. Mention milestones on the timeline: “Team Hawa Mahal has just crossed 500,000 steps.” Close with a results post and a thank-you.

## Step 7: close the contest cleanly

On the last day, freeze the leaderboard at an agreed time, export the final standings, and announce winners within a day. Archive the data and keep reports: daily and total steps, consistency, improvement and variance, and team totals. If you use the results in an HR report, say how many people took part and out of how many were invited.

## A week-by-week plan for a four-week programme

| Week | Focus | Message to send |
| ------------- | --------------------------------------- | ----------------------------------------------------------- |
| Before launch | Rules page, team lists, permission help | How to allow steps on Android and iPhone |
| Week 1 | Habit | Everyone’s first sync; first streak badges |
| Week 2 | Competition | Mid-table teams get a nudge, boost day announced |
| Week 3 | Recovery | Acknowledge the dip; highlight improvement, not just totals |
| Week 4 | Finale | Countdown to the freeze time; results post |

Use the plan as a draft. After week one, read the real participation figures and adjust. If a third of the invited people have not synced a single day, the problem is permissions, not motivation, and the fix is a help message.

## How Sociana handles this

[Step challenges with Health Connect and Apple Health](https://sociana.in/features/step-challenges-and-health-sync/) stores a start date, goals and caps per day, and shows today, total, average, best-day and hourly views, with team targets, boosts and streaks. The [unified leaderboard](https://sociana.in/features/unified-leaderboard/) keeps individual and team rank in one place, [badges and streaks](https://sociana.in/features/badges-and-streaks/) add recognition, and [groups](https://sociana.in/features/groups-and-cohorts/) hold the teams.

The Jharokha Sangam team offsite in Jaipur, 25 to 27 September 2026, ran Today’s Stepathon with Apple Health and Health Connect sync, a five-huddle Palace Walk for teams, medallions and a leaderboard. The recorded lessons were that once-only checkpoint scoring and attempt limits stop points being farmed, and that health-source deduplication and excluding manual entries protect a step leaderboard. ## Frequently asked questions

### Do participants need a fitness band?

No. A phone that counts steps and writes them to Health Connect or Apple Health is enough. A band helps only if it writes into the same health store.

### Can we run a stepathon for a three-day offsite?

Yes. Shorten the contest, raise the visibility of the leaderboard and consider boost days for the quieter day. The Jharokha Sangam ran across a three-day offsite.

### How do we stop people cheating?

You cannot stop everyone, but you can make cheating pointless. Exclude manual entries, cap daily steps, deduplicate sources and review unusual days. Make the rules public so that most people do not try.

### Is this a corporate wellness platform?

No. Sociana runs step and activity challenges inside a programme or occasion app. It does not offer sleep, nutrition or mental-wellness tracking.
