Feature selection matrix

A planning grid that turns thirty-odd app features into a decision: switch on, switch on later or leave off. Each row has an audience, an effort rating and a sign-off column so a committee can settle scope in one meeting instead of five email threads.

  • 32 rows
  • About 30 minutes in a scoping meeting
  • Version 1.0

Everything below is free to read and copy. A person from our team emails you the editable working file (CSV, opens in Excel or Google Sheets) within one working day.

Who it is for

  • Corporate event managers agreeing scope with HR, sales and leadership
  • HR and L&D leads running a recurring programme who want a lean first launch
  • Anyone briefing an agency and needing one page that fixes the scope

How to use it

  1. Copy the sheet and delete features you already know you will not use.
  2. In the meeting, read each row aloud and record Keep, Later or Drop in the Decision column.
  3. Give every Keep an owner who will supply its content before the content deadline.
  4. Re-read the Keep rows against the Effort column; if more than a third are High effort, move some to Later.

Where it has been used

Patterns here come from scoping conversations on annual meets and wellness programmes, where the shortest launches were the ones with the fewest features switched on at first.

Questions people ask

How many features should a first launch include?

Most annual meets do well with eight to twelve: login, agenda, notices, one participation feature, feedback and reports. Each extra feature needs content and an owner, so count owners, not features.

What does the Effort column mean?

Effort is the work your team does, not the platform. Low means a few fields; Medium means a content file or an import; High means ongoing moderation, prizes or approvals on event days.

Can the matrix be used for a wedding or an exhibition?

Yes. Change the Audience column to guests or visitors and strike out the corporate rows. The decision logic of keep, later or drop is the same for any occasion.
