Leaderboard fairness simulator
Without a daily cap, a few very active players decide a points leaderboard. At a 300-person dealer meet where 10% play four times as much as everyone else, leaders finish on 864 points against 216 and take all 10 prizes. A daily cap near 160 points keeps the leader within 1.5× of a typical player.

Decided by a few: 30 very active players can take every prize place they outnumber. Add a daily cap near 160 points, or split prizes by team or region.

A two-group model, not a forecast of who wins. Real play is spread out; use it to compare rules, not to predict names.
How we calculate
- Daily points
min(actions per day × average points, daily cap)Very active players do the same actions, several times more often. A cap stops counting once they reach it.
- Leader vs typical
very active player’s total ÷ typical player’s totalUp to 1.5× a typical player can still compete; above 3× a few people decide the board.
- Prize places left
prize places − very active players (never below 0)If everyone ends on the same score, prizes are shared out by your tie-break instead.
- Late joiner
maximum daily points × (days − days missed)Shows whether someone who joins on day two can still catch up.
- Suggested cap
1.5 × a typical player’s uncapped daily points, rounded to 10High enough that typical play is never cut off, low enough that heavy play does not run away.
Assumptions
- Two groups only: typical players and very active players. Real play is spread out; use the result to compare rules, not to predict winners.
- Every scored action is worth the average points. Giving QR checkpoints and quizzes more points than likes rewards effort, not volume.
- Points are counted only inside event windows, as the leaderboard rules allow.
- Prizes go to the top scores. Team or regional boards change the picture and are worth a separate run.

Questions about this calculator
How do I make an event leaderboard fair?
Cap points per person per day, weight effortful actions (a QR checkpoint or a finished quiz) above clicks, count only actions inside event windows, and publish the tie-break before you start. Splitting prizes by team or region also helps.
What daily points cap should I set?
About 1.5 times what a typical participant earns in a day. Lower than a typical day and everyone ties; much higher and the cap does nothing.
What if many people tie at the cap?
Decide prizes by who reached the score first, or by a final quiz. Say so in the rules on day one, so nobody feels the result was changed afterwards.
Should late joiners be able to win?
If they should, keep the event short or the cap low enough that one missed day can be made up. Otherwise run a separate “today’s top scorers” prize each day.
