What is “Participation rate”?

Participation rate is the number of unique eligible people who completed an agreed meaningful action, divided by the relevant eligible population, within a stated period.

Also called: active participation rate

Participation rate in detail

Where activation asks whether people arrived, participation asks whether they did something that matters. The organiser agrees the meaningful action in advance: answered a poll, checked in to a session, submitted a KPI entry, completed a quiz, synced steps on enough days. Only then is the rate computed, with unique people in the numerator and the relevant eligible population as the denominator. The relevant population can be narrower than the whole occasion, such as members of the Partners group for a partner poll. This precision protects against vanity numbers. Fifty answers from five enthusiastic people is not participation of fifty people. Sociana records the underlying actions in separate modules, so the same occasion can report participation per feature, per group and per period. It pairs naturally with unique accepted attendance for in-room presence and with valid synced days in wellness programmes, each being a specific flavour of the same discipline.

How Sociana uses it

Participation is derived from module records such as polls, quizzes, attendance and submissions, and cut by group or period in reports and exports. The meaningful action must be agreed before the occasion.

Example

A recurring ethics-ambassador programme tracked who submitted KPI entries each quarter against the enrolled ambassador list.

Questions

How is participation rate different from activation rate?

Activation counts people who signed in and used the app. Participation counts people who completed an agreed meaningful action, so it is the stricter measure. Participation rate is the number of unique eligible people who completed an agreed meaningful action, divided by the relevant eligible population, within a stated period.

What counts as a meaningful action?

The organiser decides before launch, for example answering a poll, checking in, submitting an entry or syncing steps, and the same definition is used throughout. The meaningful action must be agreed before the occasion. The organiser agrees the meaningful action in advance: answered a poll, checked in to a session, submitted a KPI entry, completed a quiz, synced steps on enough days.

Why use unique people rather than total actions?

Total actions can be inflated by a few enthusiastic users. Unique eligible people show how widely the occasion actually engaged its audience. Only then is the rate computed, with unique people in the numerator and the relevant eligible population as the denominator.
