What is “Team target”?

A team target is a combined or average goal that a team of participants works toward over a programme, such as total steps or a points threshold, shown against current progress.

Also called: group step goal, combined goal

Team target in detail

Individual goals suit the already motivated; team targets draw in everyone else. A team target gives a group a shared number to chase: combined steps over six weeks, an average per member, or a points threshold. Progress appears on team views in the app, and the target can be expressed as a route, so cumulative steps move the team along a journey. Because the goal is shared, a participant's bad day is covered by a teammate's good one, and peer encouragement does work that no notification can. Team targets depend on clean group assignment, so imports and self-join rules need attention before launch. They interact with weekly pace, which tells a team how much it must do each week to arrive on time, and with team leaderboards for comparison between teams. Organisers should choose combined or average deliberately: combined rewards larger teams, average is fairer when team sizes differ.

How Sociana uses it

Team targets are set per group in the step-challenge configuration and read by team views, team leaderboards and journey-progress visuals.

Example

A corporate walking programme gave each team a shared step target with progress shown inside the app.

Questions

Should a team target be combined or average?

Combined favours larger teams. Average is fairer when team sizes differ, so choose according to how evenly teams are formed. A team target gives a group a shared number to chase: combined steps over six weeks, an average per member, or a points threshold.

Where does the team see progress?

In team views in the app, and on a journey route if the programme uses one, so cumulative steps are visible to every member. A corporate walking programme gave each team a shared step target with progress shown inside the app.

What does a team target depend on?

Clean group assignment. Imported team fields or self-join rules should be settled before launch so everyone starts in the right team. Progress appears on team views in the app, and the target can be expressed as a route, so cumulative steps move the team along a journey.
