What is “Team leaderboard”?

A team leaderboard ranks groups rather than individuals, by combined or average points or steps, so people compete for their team while the unified leaderboard remains individual.

Also called: team board, group ranking

Team leaderboard in detail

Individual rankings motivate the top ten and discourage the rest; team boards fix that by making everyone's contribution count toward a shared position. In Sociana the team leaderboard is a view of the unified leaderboard grouped by team or group, ranking by combined or average points. Because teams are groups, they can be assigned by organiser, imported from profile fields such as city or zone, or chosen by members when self-join is on. The choice between combined and average is the key design decision: combined suits equally sized teams and rewards volume, while average is fairer when sizes differ. Team boards pair well with team targets in step challenges and with group competitions at offsites. They do not replace individual recognition; many programmes show both, with the individual board for top performers and the team board for belonging. Display on a venue screen to give teams something to cheer at.

How Sociana uses it

The team board reads the same points as the unified leaderboard, grouped by group. Staff exclusion and admin adjustments apply to team totals as well.

Example

A step-challenge programme ranked teams on combined progress while individuals appeared on a separate board.
