Sociana + SMS OTP gateways
Sociana can log guests in with a one-time code sent by SMS, WhatsApp or email. SMS goes through a gateway configured for the organisation, with message text, sender and a fallback set in the admin panel. The gateway for each app is available on request. Indian SMS needs DLT registration.
Live
What it does inside Sociana
A guest types a phone number, receives a five-digit code and enters it; on many phones it auto-fills. The organiser can switch between SMS, WhatsApp and email OTP and set a fallback. Delivery logs show what was sent, so a missing code can be traced. Other login models (employee code, delegate PIN, allowed email domains) avoid OTP altogether.
What the organiser configures
- Which OTP channels are on: SMS, WhatsApp, email
- OTP message text and sender ID
- Fallback order if the first channel fails
- Rate limits and resend wording
- Delivery logs
Data that flows, and where it is stored
| Data | From | To | Stored |
|---|---|---|---|
| Phone number and one-time code | Sociana | SMS gateway, then carrier | Gateway keeps its own logs; Sociana keeps a send record |
| Delivery receipt | Gateway | Sociana delivery log | Sociana database (hosting region on request) |
Data protection (DPDP)
The organiser is the Data Fiduciary and Sociana acts as processor. Ask us for the hosting region and retention period that apply to your occasion; the sub-processor list is on the Sub-processors and integrations page. We do not state a region or retention period on this page.
Security notes
- The OTP is a credential; it should never be shared in group chats. Ask us for the expiry and attempt limits.
- Phone numbers pass to the gateway and carriers.

Questions people ask
What happens if the SMS code does not arrive?
The guest can resend, and the organiser can have a fallback channel such as WhatsApp or email. The delivery log shows what was sent so the team can trace it. We do not promise carrier delivery.
Do we have to use OTP?
No. Employee-code login, delegate ID with PIN, occasion codes and allowed company email domains are alternatives, and some programmes use them to avoid SMS cost and delays.
Who pays for SMS?
The messages are charged by the gateway or Sociana's price sheet. Indicative figure: about ₹0.25 per SMS on actuals ex-GST. The contract terms depend on the provider.
