Approach comparison

Strava vs a corporate step-challenge app: which fits a company challenge?

Strava suits athletes who share workouts; a step-challenge app suits whole workforces with teams, targets and reports. Compare privacy, effort and fairness.

Short answer. A Strava club works when your participants already run or cycle, enjoy sharing workouts publicly and need no reporting. A step-challenge app works when you want the whole workforce, including non-athletes, in teams with daily targets, streaks, fairness rules and an HR-friendly export. The deciding factors are privacy, who is excluded and what you must report.

Disclosure. Sociana publishes this page and sells an event app, so we have an interest in approach two. We say where the other approach wins, use no statistic without a dated source, and last reviewed it on 19 Oct 2026.

What each approach is

Strava club

Employees join a company club on Strava, record runs, rides and walks, and compare on club leaderboards. Participation is voluntary and tied to each person’s personal Strava account and privacy settings.

Corporate step-challenge app

A branded app that reads daily steps from the phone’s health platform, ranks teams and individuals against targets, and gives organisers controls for fairness and exports. Participants are enrolled by the organiser rather than self-organised.

Decision table: cost, effort, data, risk and scale

Dimension Strava club Corporate step-challenge app
Cost. Cost as participants grow from 100 to 2,000 Free or low for the club; organiser hours for manual leaderboards and disputes A programme fee by scope; per-person cost falls as participation grows
Effort. Effort to set up and run Create a club and share a link; assemble results by hand Configure teams, targets and rules; daily operation is monitoring and nudges
Data. Data you keep Public activity data under each person’s own account and privacy settings Organiser-held programme data with export by team and day; participants consent to terms
Risk. Risk Non-athletes drop out; activity visibility follows each person’s own settings; no manual-entry control; reporting by screenshot Sync problems on some phones; vendor dependence; health-data handling duties
Scale. Scale A keen minority The whole workforce, including people who only walk

When a Strava club is enough

  • Your participants are already active and want to share routes and workouts.
  • No reporting is required.
  • You want zero cost and are happy with public sharing.

When a corporate step-challenge app wins

  • You want everyone in teams with daily targets and streaks.
  • You need to exclude manual entries and flag unusual days.
  • HR needs exports and a clear finale.
  • Privacy matters: you do not want staff posting activity publicly.

How Sociana fits

Sociana reads steps through Health Connect on Android and Apple Health on iPhone, ranks individuals and teams with goals, caps, boosts and streaks, and lets admins flag unusual days and exclude manual entries. It does not connect directly to Fitbit or Garmin or Strava; people with those devices need them to write to the phone’s health platform.

Features involved: Step challenges with Health Connect & Apple Health, Unified leaderboard & team boards, Badges, streaks & tiers, Groups & cohorts (group-scoped content), Reports & exports.

Worked example: HSBC Wellness Expedition

HSBC’s Wellness Expedition (1 September to 15 October 2026) gave every participant a daily dashboard of steps today, total, streak, daily average and best day, with team pace against the day’s target and an expedition journey bar to the finale. Only automatically counted steps counted; manual entries were shown as not counted, and organisers could pause syncing. The case lesson is that pausing sync and excluding manual entries are fairness controls, not afterthoughts. The page makes no outcome claims.

What to keep when you switch

Keep Strava for the keen athletes’ own clubs if they want them. Run the company challenge in the step app so that participation is inclusive and reportable.

FAQ

Can Strava run a company step challenge?

It can run activity challenges for members who record on Strava. It is not designed around enrolment, teams with daily targets or HR reporting.

Does Sociana sync with Fitbit or Garmin?

Not directly. It reads Health Connect and Apple Health only, so wearables must sync into those first.

How do you stop cheating?

Count auto-recorded steps only, exclude manual entries, cap daily totals and review flagged days. Ask every vendor what they do.

How long should the challenge run?

Four to six weeks is typical in published offers, such as a four-week single challenge from Vantage Fit.
