What is “Plenary session”?

A plenary session is a session attended by all delegates together, typically opening or closing a conference, as distinct from parallel breakout sessions.

Also called: plenary, general session

Plenary session in detail

The plenary is the room everyone shares: the opening address, the chief guest, the keynote, the award ceremony. At a convention centre with a 6,000-seat plenary, it is also the hardest room to engage, because most people are far from the stage. Sociana's role is to give the plenary a second surface. Live polls and quizzes can be switched on from stage, results appear on the venue screen, and the agenda shows which session is Live and what is Up Next. Because there is no login requirement for polls, participation does not depend on every attendee being signed in. The group rules can also direct a plenary to partners and employees separately where audiences share a room. Plan the run of show around the plenary slots first, then fit breakouts in. Prepare a fallback for connectivity, such as paper QR codes on seats, and rehearse the switching sequence so the screen operator knows when each poll goes live.
