What is “Self check-in”?

Self check-in lets a participant mark their own attendance at an activity by scanning a venue QR or tapping in the app, under the same rules staff scanning would apply.

Also called: self attendance, scan-yourself check-in

Self check-in in detail

Queues are the cost of staff-only scanning. Self check-in shifts the effort to the participant: a QR displayed at the door or on a screen, which they scan with their app, or a tap within an activity. The same attendance rules apply as for organiser scans: time windows, group eligibility, ticket requirements and repeat limits. If a participant fails a rule, the attempt is recorded and rejected. It suits session-level attendance, large audiences and low-risk activities, while high-security gates still benefit from staff scanning of the entry pass. Sociana uses the QR entry pass, organiser scan and self check-in; it does not print badges or supply kiosk hardware. Because a posted QR can be photographed and shared, rules should limit abuse, for example through time windows and by rotating or restricting the code where the occasion needs it. Pilot the flow with a few hundred real devices where possible.

How Sociana uses it

Self check-in is an option on each attendance activity. Records show attempts, time and the participant, flowing into unique accepted attendance.

Example

A cultural offsite used venue QR codes so participants could mark attendance at activities without queuing at a desk.
