A no-login live poll lets everyone in a hall answer from a QR code on the LED wall, in the phone browser, with no app install. In Sociana the organiser or an in-app manager triggers each question, and the venue screen shows results as answers arrive. Votes from the web and from the app land in one result.
Who this guide is for
You are the channel-marketing lead, the agency producer or the emcee’s cue-sheet owner at a dealer or partner meet. You want the room to answer in the plenary, but a third of the partners have not installed the app and you will not spend ten minutes of stage time helping them do so.
The problem with polls in a big hall
Hand-raising gives you a rough mood and no record. Asking partners to download an app on hotel Wi-Fi during a session loses the first five minutes and the people who most need persuading. Polling tools that live inside a slide deck tie the poll to one laptop and one presenter. What the producer wants is simple: a question appears, the room answers, a chart appears, the emcee reacts, and the answers can be reported later by partner group.
Options compared
| Approach | Setup effort | Who can answer | Result on screen | Record afterwards |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Show of hands | None | Anyone who is watching the emcee | None | None |
| Paper slips | Printing, collection | Anyone with a pen | After counting | Manual |
| In-app poll only | Low | Members who installed and logged in | Yes | Per member |
| No-login poll via QR | Low | Anyone with a camera and a browser | Yes | One merged result |
The last row is the useful one for a mixed room. It does not replace the in-app poll; it sits beside it, because Sociana runs both on the same engine.
Step by step
Step 1: Write the questions as a sequence
Fix the order against the run-of-show: a warm-up question near the opening, one or two content questions during the product session, a feedback question near close. Keep each question answerable in under ten seconds, with at most four options. A poll that needs reading is a survey; put it in feedback forms.
Step 2: Switch on the no-login option
In the admin panel, enable the no-login live polls switch for the occasion. This publishes a public web link and QR code for the poll. Decide at this point whether any poll is restricted to a group. At a partner meet it is common to ask partners and employees different questions in the same hall, or to keep the employee sentiment question off the partners’ screens.
Do it in Sociana: live polls and voting with the “No-login live polls” and “Group polls” switches.
Step 3: Prepare each question with visibility off
Load all questions before the event with visibility off, so that nothing appears early. At Unstoppable NAMI 2026 the team prepared polls this way and released them from the stage. Visibility is a control, not a draft state; test it by opening the poll link from a phone that is not signed in.
Step 4: Put the QR on the wall, large
The QR code is the whole interface. Brief the AV team to show it full-screen with a one-line instruction, and to hold it for the first twenty seconds of every question. A code in a corner of a slide cannot be scanned from the fifth row. Share the same link in the app so members do not need to scan.
Step 5: Trigger from a phone, not a laptop
Give the stage manager Manager rights in the app. They start and close each question from their phone, which means the cue can follow the emcee rather than a slide timer. See admin panel and roles for how Owner and Manager buttons appear.
Step 6: Show results on the venue screen
Use the venue-screen display, which is designed for projection: large type, one question, a live chart. Let the result sit for a beat before the emcee comments. Close the question before moving on so late voters do not shift the chart.
Step 7: Export and report
After the session, read responses per question and participation by group. If points for participation are on, answers also add to the leaderboard, which gives partners a reason to install the app on the second day.
Pitfalls
- A QR that needs a login screen. Check the public link from a phone with no session. If it asks for credentials, the no-login switch is off.
- Venue Wi-Fi as the single point of failure. Phones on mobile data can still reach the web link; tell the room the guest Wi-Fi is optional.
- Four poll types in one hour. Mixing polls, a word cloud and a quiz in one session confuses the emcee. Run the sequence once with the AV team.
- Leaving staff in the result. Internal team members answering from the stage inflate numbers. Use staff exclusion so the chart reflects partners.
India and SAARC notes
India had 1.03 billion internet users in October 2025 (DataReportal, Digital 2026), and Android held 93.89% of the mobile OS market in September 2026 (StatCounter). A browser-based poll therefore reaches almost any phone in the room without a store download, which matters most at partner meets where many dealers arrive on their own device. Reading the QR from the camera app works on current Android and iPhone handsets. For multi-language rooms, write each question in the language of the hall and keep options short; the Sociana poll display accepts text in any script.
How Sociana handles this
The same poll engine serves the app and the open web: the organiser or a manager triggers a question, the venue-screen display renders results, and answers from both doors are merged so the leaderboard and reports see one set. Group polls let a partner meet ask partners and employees separately. The HCCB Partners Meet 2026 ran plenary polls scoped by group in Goa, with content separated for partners and employees. For a lighter on-screen format, see word clouds; to understand why the open door matters, read no-login polls and the QR on the venue screen. You can try it in the live poll on a venue screen demo.
Sociana does not add a plug-in to PowerPoint or Google Slides. The poll is run from the app and the admin panel and shown through the venue screen.
FAQ
Do attendees need the Sociana app to vote?
No. A no-login poll opens from the QR or public link in a normal phone browser. Members who are signed in to the app can answer there instead, and both sets of answers land in the same occasion.
Can we run different polls for different groups in one hall?
Yes. Group polls restrict a question to one or more groups, such as partners or employees. Results are reported per group, and each group scope should be tested separately before the event.
How many questions should a plenary have?
Three to five works for most partner meets: one opener, two content questions and one feedback question. More than that and the poll becomes the programme.
Does a poll give attendees points?
Yes, if participation points are configured. Points can be awarded per answer or per correct quiz answer, and they feed the unified leaderboard.
